Major Causes of Car Accidents

According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), in 2012, there were 5,615,000 police-reported crashes which resulted in 2,362,000 injuries, and 30,800 fatalities. Most common causes of car accidents:

  • Alcohol: alcohol-impaired driving accounted for 10,322 fatalities (31%).
  • Speeding: speeding accounted for 10,219 fatalities (30%).
  • Distracted driving: 3,328 people were killed in distracted driving crashes and another 421,000 people were injured.

The Centers for Disease Control (CDC) reports that motor vehicle crashes were the leading cause of death for age 4, and for people ages 11 through 27 (based on latest available 2009 data).
