Kenneth C. (Trey) Smith, III was raised in Ashland, KY, and is the son of Ginny Smith and the late Ken C. Smith, II. Trey is a 1996 graduate of Russell High School in Russell, KY. After high school, Trey attended and graduated from the University of Kentucky, where he majored in Accounting and minored in French. At UK, Trey had the opportunity to study French abroad in Aix-en-Provence and Strasbourg, France. He also had a chance to study economics abroad at the University of Lancaster in Lancaster, England.
After graduating from UK, Trey attended the University of Kentucky College of Law, where he received CALI Awards in Employee Benefits Law and International Taxation. During his law school career, Trey began working as a law clerk for Kirk Law Firm in Paintsville, KY starting in October 2002. Trey’s work as a law clerk centered on managing and litigating the firm’s Social Security disability claims.
After graduating from the UK College of Law in December 2004 and passing the Kentucky bar exam in February 2005, Trey began working full-time as an attorney in Kirk Law Firm’s Catlettsburg office, which relocated to 1416 Winchester Avenue, Ashland, KY 41101 in December 2012. He also works weekly at Kirk Law Firm’s Louisa office. In April 2015, Trey became a licensed attorney in Ohio.
Trey is a Kentucky and Ohio trial attorney who handles personal injury cases, workers’ compensation claims, Social Security disability claims, and a variety of other general legal matters.
Trey is happily married to Shawnda M. Smith and has three lovely children, Marianne, Phoebe, and Paul. They reside on a small farm in Greenup County, Kentucky. Trey loves to spend quality time with his family, play guitar, read, and work on his farm. He is also a member of First Baptist Church in Russell, KY, where he assists in the media ministry and teaches a class to the residents of Morning Pointe Ridge Retirement Community.
